Association Membership

Three Paths to Membership

There are three membership options available.  Please read them all before deciding.  Some offer you more advantages.
1.  BIASSMD Membership.  The first membership option is "BIASSMD Membership"  This association membership has you become a member of the local association.  The advantage is that your membership funds go entirely to the local association.  You are able to support local survivors with your membership fee and participate in Association activities.  This form must be printed off and mailed into the Association with a cheque.
2.  Joint Association Membership. The second membership option is a dual membership.  When you join through this application you become a member of the local association (BIASSMD) and the provincial association (Ontario Brain Injury Association - OBIA).  OBIA is an active contributor to our local association, as both associations are affiliated, and through your membership you receive the OBIA magazine and have the opportunity to attend courses etc.

Your membership fee will be split between OBIA and BIASSMD.

To join through this application click the appropriate button.  This form is filled out on the computer.

3.  Participate in a Research Study.  If you are a survivor consider this.  The OBIA website states:  "
In appreciation for your participation in our research study, you will receive a free one year dual membership with both OBIA and the local brain injury association of your choice and a Survivor Identification Card. This wallet sized card contains emergency contact information and information about acquired brain injury should it be required when you or your loved one are out in the community."  This form is filled out on the computer.

Why Join

Why join?  There are really two reasons why you should consider joining the Association.  Simply put:

1.  You can be of assistance to those who are truly in need and are local.  Your level or participation can be set by yourself, but you can help through your membership fee which is used to support Association programs, you can help through mentorship, which allows you to reach out to an individual who is in need due to a brain injury, you can become active in presentations to groups or schools.  Reach out to lawyers and others to ensure they understand the needs of the community or you can specialize in many areas, such as fund raising.

2.  You can be assisted in many areas of your life if you are a brain injury survivor or the caregiver to a survivor.  Although you might not need a constant friend to offer you assistance, such as provided by our mentoring program, it i nice to have a contact who can help you on those occasions when things just become overwhelming.  Not as a replacement for family and friends, but someone who has a special understanding of the challenges you face due to their own experience.

Of course there are other reasons, which vary as widely as the individuals who join.  Some join for the tax benefit, others to add experience and information to research and educational resources and others just for the satisfaction of helping.  The reasons are individual, and yours are no less important than others.
